Design analysis
In preparation for our own magazines, we had to look at other magazines with similar topics, and analyze the cover, table of contents, 1 two page spread, then figure out who this magazine is for. We also had to say which conventions we would like to have in our magazine
While viewing the cover, I noticed a few things that I like. I like how on the covers; it shows the very essence and feel of fishing by using shots that capture the fish in its natural habitat. What catches my eye is the secondary coverlines that give a brief description of the rest of the magazine. What also catches my eye is the big letters on that are eye catching. The magazines don’t have all the conventions listed. My magazine will try to contain all of the conventions, but I know that making a puff may be challenging.
The next step was to analyze the Table of contents. They few things I noticed were that Anglers Journal’s TOC title is just their magazine name. Florida sport fishing has the subheading of their cover as the title of their TOC. The thing that catches my eye on Anglers journal is the picture of someone pulling a fish out of the water which is right next to the TOC. On Florida sport fishing, the thing that catches my eye is the big picture of the red snapper on the right page. Each section header and page numbers are each apart in their own place, separated by a little bit of space between. The photography is close to each picture, because people will only glance at the table of contents when they need to know pages, so they take close pictures in to make the reader analyze the picture and spend more time on the TOC. The font on Florida sport fishing is a basic black on white text that doesn’t look like it had much though put into it. Angler’s journal changes it up a little bit by making the text a bit dark yellow but doesn’t make it any more appealing. Not all conventions are included in the TOC, including both magazines not having any social media included.
The third analysis was of the two page spread. On the pages I chose, I like how on the spreads, it doesn’t just show you picture of fish and a little bit of detail, it also provides a guide to what bait, line, and knots to use. There is also input from the writer about what he prefers to use. What catches my eye is the picture that spreads across the two pages. I am also attracted to the bar on the right that contains the information described previously. The headline for the spread is on the top left where almost every other magazine headline is placed, so that the viewer is used to the layout. The photograph was shot using a drone so that the viewer can not only read about where the fish's habitat is, but also see it as well. The font color is white with a small shadow behind it. The font is also small, which allows the writer to fit more information in the article. The two-page spread I picked contains all the conventions. I plan to use all the conventions except the alignment. It won’t look right if my picture is center while the rest of my article is left aligned.
The last analysis we had to do was for who this magazine was meant for. I noticed some pretty interesting things. The first thing I noticed was that the target audience for this magazine doesn’t exist in a specific age group. The information can be read by anyone and used by anyone. Anyone can learn how to fish, and anyone can fish. Although, some parts of the magazine are targeted towards older audiences, such as the pages where bigger fish are represented and people with big muscles are catching them. Representation will be shown in my magazine by having pictures of fish, and of the people catching them.
