Genre research activity
For our magazines, we had to look at other magazines to find out what genre we wanted to use, and get some inspiration for how we wanted our magazines to look. I will show the thought process and I analyze the magazines I picked below:
1. My genre is Nature
2. Genre conventions- Content
a) The topics included in my magazines were fishing and the content ranged from different kinds of fish to different kinds of rods and reels, to boats, and where to fish for said species of fish
b) My genre contains tips on what rods to use, what reels to use, what baits to use, what hooks sizes to use, and what fish you should target
c) The genre includes interviews from anglers who talk about how they prefer fishing in some areas rather than others. It also includes dialogue of anglers who are on boats
d) All magazines in this genres offer different information, such as different boats, sport fishing clothing brands, and fishing gear companies
e) Picture sizes vary depending on how much information is in the article. Article lengths vary depending on how much information the writer is trying to convey to the viewer. The articles are written is past tense
f) Products are presented as individual pictures, most likely to highlight the product so the viewer can see it as its own
g) In one of the magazines, the words, “Beast Mode” are repeated a few times as headlines for pages. On these pages, the article is about anglers who caught big fish
h) Some contents are dependent on the time of year, such as when to fish. At different temperatures, fish will act accordingly. For example, during the colder weather, fish will be harder to catch whereas during the hotter times, fish will appear more on the surface
i) Could not find any literary devices in the places I searched
j) The kinds of products advertised in my genre are boat brands like Viking yachts, Pursuit. and sport fishing cloths brands like Grundens
3. Genre Conventions-Production Techniques
a) The front covers typically have pictures using a fast shutter speed to capture a fish jumping out of water. The photographer uses a wide depth of field to capture the fish, people in the background, and the water details
b) The pictures in the magazine vary from close up shots to drone shots
c) May use enticing phrases such as “Snakeheads, The misunderstood dragon”
d) Use explanation marks on the front page with the words, “Beast Mode” in order to catch the readers attention
e) Some magazines include locations of where the photos were shot or where the fish can be found
f) One of the magazines has 4 phrases at the top which give a short two word sentence to what the rest of the magazine is about
g) Most of the magazines fonts stay the same throughout the magazines
h) The main magazine I was looking at contained a selling line and a slogan
i) The magazines don’t include a byline
j) Depending on the season, the magazine colors could change to match the time of day most of the pictures are taken in
4. Institutional Conventions- How the Genre is Marketed
a) There isn't a primary audience for this genre because anyone can go fishing
b) This genre is aimed toward people who are curious and want to learn about nature, or to learn more about nature
c) In some of the magazines, it included dialogue and post of social media
5. Magazine Sample Analysis
a) This issue of Florida Sport Fishing embodies the nature genre because its main goal is to inform readers about the latest news surrounding fishing. It uses big letters along with subtitles on the front cover to catch the viewers' attention. An example of this is the text presented on the middle of the cover that says, “Beast Mode!” while being next to a big fish. This shows the reader that the magazines will contain content such as big fish. The rest of the magazine contains information such as lobster fishing and fishing for big fish.
b) This issue of Anglers Journal embodies the genre of nature because if focuses on give the reader information on fishing, boating, and fish in the environment. The magazine’s front cover shows a Marlin jumping out of the water, which to some people could be enticing because it might say to them that the magazine explains how to catch one. The words, “Big-Water Adventure” are also featured in big letters to catch the reader attention. This magazine feature more of stories of what happens on a boat while fishing, and dialogue of the winners of fishing tournaments. This magazine also features a lot of advertisements.
