Cover of my magazine

Image
After months of learning, we are finally getting started on our magazines. The first step in creating our magazine was designing the cover. This is what my rough draft/blue print looked like.  When designing my cover, I looked at magazines with similar topics, and when doing so, I chose to put a strap line at the top to put what the core values of my magazine are about. I also decided to put my coverline and secondary coverlines to the sides of the cover so it will focus on the Cover image.  This is the final product of my magazine cover. I decided to change the font style to give the magazine a more appealing look while also allowing it to be readable, to i went with Algerian for the title, MV boli for the cover line, and Maiandra GD for everything else.

The importance of copy

Image
Copy is the most important part of magazines. Without it, a magazine would just be a bunch of pictures without any meaning. Copy gives the viewer guidance which allows the viewer to know what is going on in the image.  Take this picture for example. By looking at this photo, you might just think it is a picture of a hockey player, but in reality, the rest of the article is about a possible trade with the player involved in the photo. Without a caption or copy, you would have never known that.

Designing the layout

Image
When designing the layout of my cover, i decided that it shouldn't be too flashy and should capture the essence of a nature magazine. By keeping the copy low and the cover image big, you are able to see the cover image a lot better than having things cover it.  When designing the table of contents, I decided to put a picture of water on the left page cutting into the right page, because it shows what type of water will be fished in for the magazine  This is the rough draft of the cover and the Table of contents.  In my later blog post, i will dive deeper into the rest of my blueprints, but for now, this is what i came up with. That's all for now! Signing off,                     Bradley

CCR #3 and CCR #4

Image
It has come to the time where i must answer the two final CCR questions. For the first question, it asks:  3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project? I believe that as I continued on with my project, I learned more things along the way that would help me in the long run. As an example, I would have never known to adjust all different elements of the camera to take a photo. I would have taken a picture and been done with it. Learning all different elements such as lighting and background also helped because i would have been taking pictures as found out after I took them that the lighting was wrong and that there was distracting elements in the background. 4.  How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project? During this project, i integrated online software like Photopea, which helped me edit photos at home to practice with photoshop and editing. I am also in the process of using InDesign to help create my Cover...

Why photo planning is important

Image
Photo planning is also a very important part of photography. It is better to have an idea of what you will be photographing instead of going to the spot for the photos, and scrambling around trying to find positions, lighting, backgrounds, etc. Imagine you are doing a photoshoot for a up and coming cosplayer. You get to your spot and when they ask you, "what should i do now?" You will have no clue since you did not plan beforehand. Now, your customer is mad because you are wasting their time and while your scrambling around, might take sloppy photos. Photography is not to be taken lightly and needs planning along with applying what you learned about it. That's all for today! Signing off,                    Bradley

Depth of field and photography techniques

Image
One of the first lesson's we learned in media studies was of Depth of field and photography techniques. Depth of field which can also be called aperture, is one of the simplest but most important and effective techniques in photography. Depth of field is what affects your focus on the objects in the photo. By using more a more deep depth of field, you will focus on everything in the view of the photo. By using shallow, the camera will adjust to focus on the closest object in view. In this example, it shows the difference between narrow/shallow and wide/deep. By using narrow, you can eliminate unnecessary objects from the background.  As for other techniques, the two other main techniques are Shutter speed and ISO. Shutter speed affects how fast the camera takes a picture. The faster a picture is taken, the less light is taken into the camera. The slower a picture is taken, more light is let into the camera. ISO essentially affects how "grainy" or pixelated your photo bec...

Importance of composition, cropping, and storage

Image
Before completing our final magazines, we have to take the pictures that will be included in our cover, table of contents, and two page spread. Three of the things we learned about were composition, cropping, and storage. It might not seem like much, but these factors play a big role in photography.  Composition is important because if the different elements of a photo, the viewer will not find it aesthetically pleasing if composition is not used correctly. Multiple different elements are included in composition, such as rule of thirds, balance and symmetry, leading lines, creative framing, depth of field, and distracting elements. Rule of thirds are when the subject are put into either the left or right segment in order to leave the other two open. Balance is when all elements of the photo attract the viewers attention. Leading lines are when a human made or natural line or lines lead the viewers eyes through the image. Creative framing is used to add drama or impact to an i...

Preparing for CCR #2

Image
To answer my CCR 2 question, I had to figure out what my target audience was. I didn't want to lock my topic behind a wall, so my product will not belong to a specific age group. My magazine is open to anyone who wants to read it. weather that be someone who has no clue how to fish, or someone who hasn't fished in a while and wants to get back into it. My magazine could be distributed as virtual magazine for people who find it easier to go online instead of going to the store.  This paragraph shows that by thinking about what wording you use, it can help appeal to all audiences, as well as the phrase, "fisherman are quite nice", which doesn't apply to a specific age group.

Design analysis

Image
In preparation for our own magazines, we had to look at other magazines with similar topics, and analyze the cover, table of contents, 1 two page spread, then figure out who this magazine is for. We also had to say which conventions we would like to have in our magazine  While viewing the cover, I noticed a few things that I like.  I like how on the covers; it shows the very essence and feel of fishing by using shots that capture the fish in its natural habitat. What catches my eye is the secondary coverlines that give a brief description of the rest of the magazine. What also catches my eye is the big letters on that are eye catching. The magazines don’t have all the conventions listed. My magazine will try to contain all of the conventions, but I know that making a puff may be challenging. The next step was to analyze the Table of contents. They few things I noticed were that Angler s Journal ’s TOC title is just their magazine name. Florida sport fishing has the subheading ...

Magazine research

Image
As another part of our research, we had to research everything about a magazine company of our choice. We had to analyze their own magazines, how much profit they made, how much they loss, and more.  1. I choose Meredith       2. A) Approximately $683 million in profit in 2021   B) $ 3 10 million from subscriptions and almost 45% of all profit in 2021, $ 66 million came from single copy purchases accounting of 1 0 % profit in 2021, %307 million came from advertising making up about 45%   C) They sold more physical copies totaling to $948.1 million compared to $81.9 million online copies.    D) Meredith spent %1.02 billion in 2021, accounting for 32.4% of all revenue from that year. They spent $507.9 million on printing   E) Meredith profited $159 million in 2017, $159 million in 2018, $328 million in 2019, $159 million in 2020, and $ 683 million in 2021   F) Better Homes and Gardens: lifestyle    People: Celebrity...
